After administering anesthesia, your dentist will place a rubber sheet around the tooth to keep bacteria in saliva from contaminating the exposed tooth. Next, the dentist will drill to the pulp area either through the top or the back of the tooth and then extract the pulp. The pulp is often referred to as a tooth's nerve, though it is not a nerve. Measuring pulp extracted from canals will allow the dentist to clean the entire canal and ensure that enough of the filling material will be used to completely fill the canal. Root canal files are used to clean the canal thoroughly. A rubber material will be inserted into the tooth's canals, and then the opening will be sealed.
A temporary filling will be affixed to the tooth between procedures if necessary. A crown or permanent filling will be affixed after your surgeon is confident no infection remains, which is usually within a month. If the tooth is weakened by the root canal, a post may be required to regain stability in structure.
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is the norm.
Recovery Time
Once anesthesia wears off, some soreness may remain. However, with over-the-counter pain and inflammation medication, patients can resume normal activities after the various stages of the procedure.
Risks/Complications/Side Effects
If bacteria is not entirely removed from a tooth, pain and swelling can remain or return. In this case, the dentist will have to re-evaluate the dental plan and decide if the tooth can still be salvaged. The main problems resulting from a root canal are weakened tooth structure or remaining infection that can cause an abscess.
Post Operative Care
Patients should expect 2 to 3 days of soreness, possibly longer if the infection was severe. Ibuprofen will soothe pain and swelling. Patients should discuss a soft diet with the dentist. If soreness, swelling, or pain persists, consult the dentist.
