Teratology of fallot is a rare congenital pediatric cardiac defect. Tetra logy of fallot means four defects of heart which can be treated either soon after the birth or later depending upon the severity of defects. This rare and complex heart defect occurs in about 5 out every 10,000 babies.

Tetra logy of Fallot is classified as a cyanotic heart defect because the condition causes low oxygen levels in the blood. This leads to cyanosis (a bluish-purple color to the skin).

The factors or the conditions during pregnancy like poor nutrition , mother taking alcohol, diabetes, Heredity may increase the risk of  having a child with TOF.

The tetralogy of fallot includes four related defects of the heart and its major blood vessels:

Ventricular septal defect (hole between the right and left ventricles)

Narrowing of the pulmonary outflow tract (the valve and artery that connect the heart with the lungs)

Overriding aorta (the artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the body) that is shifted over the right
    ventricle and ventricular septal defect, instead of coming out only from the left ventricle

A thickened muscular wall of the right ventricle (right ventricular hypertrophy)

Tetalogy of fallot can be repaired with open heart surgery either soon after birth or later in infancy. The pediatric cardiac surgery is done to repair the defects of the heart so that it can work as normally as possible.

Tetralogy of Fallot is treated surgically. Some times a temporary operation may be done at first if the baby is small. Complete repair comes later. Mostly, the first operation is a complete intracardiac repair.
